The spreadsheet was broken down between how many fruits, vegetable, grains, protein foods, milk, and fats, and discretionary calories I obtained each day. Discretionary calories are excess calories that we are allowed to eat once our nutrient needs have been met (Sizer and Whitney 43-44). Discretionary calories are usually foods containing higher fats and sugars …show more content…

However, this one week experiment of recording my diet and analyzing daily consumptions of nutrients made me realize that I need to improve my diet in carbohydrate and protein intakes, consumption of vitamin D, E, choline, and mineral intakes of potassium and sodium. To bring a well balance of macronutrients, I need to increase my protein consumption. My average protein intake is 15% of the AMDR, closer to lower range (10% to 35%). I will increase my protein consumption by eating more high quality proteins and planning my meals that include complementary protein dishes. I recognized that with my low physical activity, eating 59 % of my food intake from carbs was too high.…

The calculated amount is higher than my average intake of calories, because through the three days my average caloric intake was calculated to be 2,313 kcal. My caloric intake is still higher than my average expenditure (2,305 calories) which is good, because it is only higher by a relatively small amount. In the section labeled calories for the day it was calculated that my total calories for the day are below my goal, but after comparing the two numbers ( 2,522 and 2,313) I’m only under by a fairly small amount of 219 calories per day. This is probably where I should be though, because I believe I fall in between what they would consider to be active and sedentary. My carbohydrates intake is also below the goal, but this was suggested in the calorie and fat report, because my AMDR for carbohydrates was at the lower end of the scale.…

The dietary reference intake table (DRI) is a comprehensive document providing the amounts of each individual nutrient one would need at different stages of their life which include age, sex, lactation and pregnancy. Conventionally, consumers are expected to use the recommended dietary allowance or RDA, derived from the estimated average requirement or EAR, to gage approximately how much of a nutrient they should aim to consume within their day. Note that while the latter value will satisfy the nutrient intake level for 50% of the population the initial value is projected to satisfy necessary nutrient intake for approximately 98% of the population. When researchers lack these two values a adequate intake value or AI is generated, reflecting the estimated an appropriate nutrient consumption by healthy individuals as defined by experimental studies. Upper intake levels are provided for nutrients that can reach a level of toxicity in the body when over consumed.…
