Essay Graduation Speech : My College Experience
Tennessee State University. I was so excited to be the first person from my mother’s side of the family, and the fourth from my father’s side to be attending college; I felt invincible. I decided I wanted the full college experience by leaving home and going to school in another city, and I was so sure about my decision no one could talk me out it. I chose my school, my major, and my roommate all on my own. I was eighteen and I felt like I knew it all, as most eighteen year olds do. After transferring to the University of Memphis and moving back home, changing my major and being indecisive about what it was I truly wanted to do with my life, I finally settled on a career path that I felt was “safe.” I decided to go into the field of education and get my degree in English while I minored in Sociology. At that point in my life I thought I had it all mapped out, I was going to teach for a local high school and go back to get my Master’s in
Administration. I felt I had the five year plan although I had never stepped foot into a classroom or knew anything about teaching. It was not until the fall semester of my Senior year of college that I began substitute teaching locally, and I then realized I hated everything about it.
Fast forward to now, almost a year later. I began doing research on what it was that I could see myself doing for the rest of my life, something I enjoyed. I had to…
