“Deeper Into my Life” Individuals are unique in their own ways and one of mine happens to be my name, Darrnyejah Bolds. Everywhere I go people have a hard time pronouncing it. Many people have given up and just refer to me as “Ms. Bolds,” but also I have two nicknames “Nye”, and “Nyejah,” which is mostly used by family and friends. Over the years, I have adjusted to my nicknames and became very comfortable with them. I entered this world on February 27, 1997 with the zodiac sign of Pisces. New Orleans, Louisiana, my hometown, has allowed me to develop a forward thinking mindset as well as a calm collectedness like the Jazz music my city is known for. Up until about eight years of age I lived in New Orleans, until my family and I evacuated to Houston, Texas to escape the category five Hurricane Katrina. Because of the destruction the storm unleashed on my hometown we ended up living in Texas for three years. Although it was not home, those three years were some of the best times of my life. I decided to live on campus for the entire year, and got some pretty useful experiences. It was my first time being on my own and I learned that by living on campus I was able to get better grades. I had a successful year, and finished with a 3.8 GPA. I ended up sitting out the next year so that I could rethink my major and focus on my personal life. During my break from college I decided to move to Houston with my fiancé. We decided that Houston is a better place for opportunity with jobs and starting a family. I am now enrolled at Houston Community College taking prerequisites towards my degree in Social Work. The story of my life is still being written and I am thankful for every

“we keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths” - Walt Disney. I’ve had three big moves in my life that had been hard for me, but not as much as this recent big move to San Antonio. It was a sunny, humid day in Edinburg, Tx and I was texting my best friend Mariela while she was home sick when my Mother texted my brother, sister and I that we were moving to San Antonio. I finished school a month earlier that year because of my move, so I actually ended up having a longer summer break that year. It was really nice. May 19, 2014, was my last day in Detroit, and I have not been back since then. It was time to say goodbye to my grandmother, aunt, cousins, and friends. Though it was very difficult, I had come to the conclusion that I do not want to spend my whole life upset about moving.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

Ever since I was two years old, people would shoot confused looks at me whenever I went grocery shopping with my mom. When I go to Chinese restaurants, instead of being asked what I would like to eat, I am greeted by a waiter’s stare as he or she tries to decipher my past by simply looking at the differences between my eyes and my dad’s. These types of situations where people question my life due to the physical differences between my parents and myself have occurred for as long as I can remember. Although I originally thought that, as I got older, people would eventually stop creating false presumptions about my family. However, I discovered that no matter how old I get, the fact that I have a different shade of skin than my parents will always…

An author of Saint Paul Trois, C. JoyBell C., believed that “When you lose sight of yourself, you lose your way. To keep your truth in sight you must keep yourself in sight and the world to you should be a mirror to reflect to you your image; the world should be a mirror that you reflect upon.” Looking back into my life, I’ve uncovered many roles that I have carried out to mode me into the person I am today. A role is described as the set of norms, values, behaviors, and personality characteristics attached to a status. From my childhood, I was first introduced to fulfilling the roles and responsibilities of a daughter, sister and soon later, establishing a stable, meaningful self.…
