I then researched statistics on these topics to better understand the severity of the issue. After I insured my understanding of the topic and the effects associated with it, such as unhappiness, I had to create a solution, or product, that have a probability of solving the issue. I chose to create a brochure detailing the effects of materialism, along with the statistics. Jude after reading the brochure. The other 15% expressed a desire to donate, but a lack of monetary means. I attribute this to the fact that it is not socially acceptable to ignore the plight of cancer in children and deny the ability to help through proven means. This fits into my hypothesis that people don’t realize the positive effects of helping others in lieu of self-gratification. Also, this illustrates that, overall, American society isn’t self-centered because they don't care about others, though a portion of them do, but rather because they don’t acknowledge the bigger picture.
Most of the age bracket that participated in my survey were unaware that they had the ability to make a difference in the lives of others and contribute to a cause. They didn’t understand that, statistically, if 100 people contributed only 2 dollars to a cause, that cause will have gained 200 dollars. This supports my theory that a portion of the materialism displayed by the population is breed out of ignorance. In conclusion, this study proves that it is possible to influence society into displaying more philanthropic tendencies.
