Numerous hardships in countries around the world desperately need servicing by the people of each country. Humanitarians give their time, money, and charity to help their fellow man when they cannot procure the basic needs of life. In the past, individuals helped soldiers by quartering them in their houses during war, feeding soldiers and giving them a place to sleep. A morally declining society increases its materialistic tendencies causing people to turn to Earthly possessions for happiness. In correlation, their greed has created an unequal distribution of money, a wealth gap, in the economy. Apathy in humans has created a morally declining, less hospitable society. In a short story written by Lars Eighner, “On Dumpster Diving,” Eighner describes the period in his life when he had to scavenge dumpsters for his daily necessities. He stated, “Students throw out many good things, including food” (718). He visited college dumpsters during students’ breaks because few students or people in general, who have homes, clothes, and food, think that others living on the Earth have to search through their leftovers for something edible or fit for wearing.
