General Motors Counterproductive Approach

General Motors (GM) operates in a customer-centric atmosphere. Since GM’s bankruptcy and recall efforts, the company has been very sensitive about their customer base. GM indicates that they “are passionate about earning customers for life” (GM, 2015). In addition, GM suggests there team shares the same enthusiasm for “customers and a competitive spirit that drives us to excellence” (GM, 2015). According to GM (2015), this means that we are committed to delivering vehicles with compelling designs, flawless quality and reliability, and leading safety, fuel economy and infotainment features. All are intended to create that special bond that can only happen between a driver and their vehicle. Making the world’s best vehicles can only happen with the world’s greatest employees” (GM, 2015). Becker (2014) acknowledges a problem that GM is facing is its failure to innovate. Becker credits GM’s “sit back and settle” approach to its current engineering design as problematic (Becker, 2014). Becker contends this approach is a counterproductive approach because GM’s sights are set on profits, rather than investing in its future. This approach, according to Becker (2014), is ineffective as a result of evolving technology is being developed by its competitors while GM stays idle.
Additionally, Becker contends another issue GM is facing is the legislative battles over mechanical failures and recalls are counterproductive to the future of the company. According to Becker, “Every minute GM spends in the courtroom is doing harm to the company by using resources and spending time better suited to building better vehicles are being exhausted” (Becker, 2014).
