Environmental Issues In order to remain competitive in their respective industry, a business must be aware of and be able to assess the environment in which they operate. The automotive industry in America is extremely competitive; because of this, automotive companies face many challenges. Many of these challenges can be found in the industry’s global competition, new technology, environmental concerns surrounding vehicle emissions, and consumer opinions and demographics.

American auto maker Tesla has potentially made the most progress as far as vehicle technology goes. Tesla’s Model S vehicles have recently been equipped with “autopilot” technology. This allows the vehicle to steer, change lanes, park, and avoid collisions all on its own (Model S Software Version 7.0, n.d.). Some of the other technology advancements that can be seen in American vehicles include keyless entry, push-button start, navigation systems, built-in Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technology.

With a percentage this high, consumer opinions should be the driving factor behind an auto maker’s plans for the future. According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), Americans satisfaction with the automotive industry has risen 3.8 percent since 2015. This is partially due to the record number of vehicle recalls that occurred in 2015 which caused dissatisfaction among American consumers. The ACSI’s data also shows that American consumers are slightly more satisfied with foreign auto makers than domestic.
