The authors from the four memoirs overcame their childhood obstacles by bonding with family members. Gary Soto accepted working in the fields with his family. Laurence Yep realized that his father accepted him after the rat hunt. Barack Obama accepted his father. Julia Alvarez accepted going to the United States of America. Authors from the four memoirs describe overcoming obstacles to teach readers that it is possible to overcome any problem. Gary Soto accepted working in the fields with his family. In the text it stated, “Mother told me we would be working in the fields till three.” This sentence has a lot of meaning in it. His mother is pushing him by telling that they are going to work in the fields till 3. She is not asking if he wants to work in the fields till three she is telling him. In the story it stated, “Rick and I decided to take a labor bus to chop cotton.” His brother is the one who found this job for them the both of them. Soto enjoyed doing a different job because it payed more and he did not like working in the grape fields. In the story it stated, “Mother and I got up before dawn.” Again in this sentence his mother is pushing him to get up and go work in the grape fields. He was showing that it was ok that he ran and that he accepted him for it. In the text it stated, “Nobody is good at everything.” Yep’s father was telling him that it is ok for him not to be good at sports and that nobody has to be good at everything. The author wrote, “Each of us are good at somethings and lousy at others.” Yep’s father was telling him that not everyone is good at certain things.
