Everyone can overcome an obstacle, yet so many fail in doing so. The ability to overcome obstacles make people stronger and more mature. When people see such occurrences, they get inspired to make a difference. Two stories that portray this are “Champion of the World” by Maya Angelou, and “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie. Although these two stories are very different, they are also very similar. That thesis is that everyone can overcome their obstacles, no matter how big or small. The first story is by a very strong writer by the name of Maya Angelou. In this story, the author himself is the example of the person overcoming an obstacle. Like “Campion of the World” by Maya Angelou, Alexie’s obstacle includes stereotypes. For example, Alexie states, “A smart Indian us a dangerous person, widely feared and ridiculed by Indians and non-Indians alike” (325). Here Alexie is portraying that Indians are supposed to stay under the radar and by average or below average when it comes to intelligence. This sets up an obstacle for Alexie because his potential is being limited by society. Since a young age Alexie’s family was poor and lived on an Indian reservation. This is another obstacle that is holding Alexie back from potential greatness. Alexie’s father used to bring home all types of books and comics. A superman comic that used pictures and words to tell its story is what let a 3-year-old Indian boy learn how to read. The kid learned how to read with no teacher all by himself. When the time came for Alexie to prove that he could read, others put him down because he was supposed to stay quiet and act dumb because he was Indian. Alexie proved all of them wrong by not only embracing his intelligence and becoming a writer, but he also goes to different schools and teaches creative writing to Indian

Sherman Alexie in his text, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” emphasizes that at a young age found interest in reading, and getting educated played a important role in the development of his life and made him who he became to be. Firstly, Alexie in his excerpt conveyed that he understood why non-Indians feared of educated Indians because they think a educated Indian can overpower them and seize them thats why they forbid educated Indians, but that didn't stop him from expanding his knowledge of reading and writing, quoted on page 13 paragraph 3, “As Indian children we were expected to fail in the non-indian world… I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant”. This quotation explains how Alexie knew the importance of being educated, and wasn't going to put a skill at waste because of the non-Indians, but he is smart and is going to expand his knowledge for the better.…

Argument Essay The idea that a person can overcome a situation of adversity to succeed in their lives has long been ingrained in American Society. It is the basis for the longstanding cultural phenomenon known as the American Dream and manifests itself in the idolization of many American heroes. Take, for example, President Andrew Jackson. By creating that type of character, Alexie therefore can make a better connection with his audience of Indian youth, because they most likely had a similar upbringing, and have a similar attitude. This type of attitude can also appeal to Alexie’s secondary audience (society as a whole), because people would be more apt to listen to Alexie’s argument if he did not come across as pretentious. An appeal to pathos is also achieved through Alexie’s mention of an uneven childhood that was often filled with doubts if they could support themselves since it makes the audience feel sympathy for his situation. Alexie uses this appeal to pathos in order to strengthen his appeal to ethos, and to gain his audiences’ sympathy and attention. Through these two appeals, Alexie is able to make a connection between his family’s situation and the humanities.…

In the story ¨Superman and Me¨ by Sherman Alexie, Alexie starts by talking about his father loving books and the way his family and other indians live in poverty with limited resources. He explains that his dad still bought tons of books because he loves books, so he was able to excel even when they did not have much money to get the resources. He then ties this concept into how education is what saved his life and could save many others lives if they try hard enough. Which helped develop his main claim that education can literally save lives. Alexie starts to talk about how he learned to read in a very abstract way by starting to read with a superman comic book.…
