Personality is defined by Oxford Dictionary as “the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character”. However this doesn’t give a definitive explanation of exactly how an individual’s personality is formed and the factors that affect it. For years psychologists have been conducting research in order to come up with feasible methods to determine what personality is and the factors that affect it. Since then several different explanations and theories have been formed, some of which support each other and some which contradict each other. This essay will be looking at these different theories and how each of them describe what personality is.

For example if someone’s id was too active compared to their ego and superego then they may have a more impulsive personality and may be more likely to act based on what they think may be pleasurable rather than doing the rational thing. Freud’s theories were increasingly influential as he was the first person to fully work on an individual’s mind and behaviour. However it has been argued that his theories are outdated, although there has been more recent work based on his theories, proving that they are applicable even now. …show more content…
There are also other models which help to determine the type of personality someone might have, such as Costa & McCrae’s five factor model of personality traits which involve openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. This model also links in with the hexaco model, as they are similar except for the hexaco model having two extra factors added which are honesty and humility and
