Mayhem Forbidden Apple Ad Analysis

“Mayhem is everywhere,” according to All State, an insurance company, with a clear message in their advertisements: use us because your insurance provider will not protect your items to the extent that we will. All State has a series of ads where a man plays “Mayhem,” a character used to sit in for extraordinary, but possible, disasters while simultaneously narrating them with dark humor. The best example of All State’s Mayhem commercials is their 2013 Super Bowl Commercial, Mayhem Forbidden Apple, where Mayhem jumps through time to show the audience that disaster is prominent in the world using examples of the Chicago fires, Adam & Eve, and the 2013 referee strike that influenced the NFL that year. In this analysis of Mayhem Forbidden Apple, I will show what this advertisement is saying, what group of people it is targeting, how the information is put across the consumer and how well this commercial sells the product to the audience.

Using dark humor to incorporate examples of disaster happening through Mayhem narrating demise as he causes it allows people to focus on the ad instead of the harsh realities of the examples shown; an example in the commercial is playing Adam & Eve off as a joke, which is no easy feat. The commercial also does a fantastic job at slyly bashing its competitors at the end. By humbly saying “are you in good hands,” the commercial implies that you may not be safe from all accidents even if not caused by the consumer. This commercial is very impressive as a whole and hits the main points of selling a product: telling what the product is, making all other products look inferior to the one advertised, and making it stick out above all others. Mayhem Forbidden Apple is a wonderful example of how ads should be made and how a company should sell its product to consumers. Hats off to All State and their marketing
