John stated that level one of leadership is the position level. The level where people follow their leader because they must. At this level, a person is not actually a leader, they just have a title. This is the level where people give a leader the least amount of time, ability, and effort. I laughed when John talked about employees parking forward to get out of the parking lot faster after work because there is so much truth to it. I have been in management positions for the last 14 years and I can agree with John on his explanation of this level. John stated that this level is the level of respect. People follow their leader because of who they are and what they have done. This is a level that a lot of people strive for for their whole career. Not too many people will actually get to this level. To get to this level, a person must have proved themselves to be a great leader.
These five levels of management that John Wilcox talked about in the video taught me what a good leader was at each level. It also taught me what the levels really are. The video was very interesting and tied in well with our book and lectures. John used funny analogies to help get his point across about how employees respond to each kind of leader. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.
