Exercise 11 – Using Statistics to Describe a Study Sample

1. What demographic variables were measured at least at the interval level of measurement? Demographic variables that are measured at the interval level are age, income ($), length of labor (hrs), return to work (wks), number of hours working per week.

The statistics used to describe the length of labor in this study descriptive, they were mean and standard deviation. These are appropriate as they both can be calculated at the interval level of measurement.

2. What was the mean post-test empowerment score for the control group? The mean post-test empowerment score for the control group is 97.12

3. Compare the mean baseline and post-test depression scores of the experimental group. Was this an expected finding? Provide rationale for your answer. Yes this was the expected answer as the mean score for depression went down from 14.00 to 13.36. This indicates less depression after the subjects completed the empowerment program.

4. Compare the mean baseline and post-test depression scores of the control group. Do these scores strengthen or weaken the validity of the research results? Provide a rationale for your answer. The baseline and post-test depression scores are the same, 10.40. This strengthens the validity of the research results. The control group did not receive the empowerment program and the scores stayed the same while the experimental group’s depression score improved after the program was completed indicating that the program did make a difference.
