Independent Variables: having a doula during active labor
Dependent Variables: the length of labor and the apgar scoring of the infant
Target Population: Low risk, nulliparous, singleton, and low-income pregnant women with no medical complications.
Study Population: six hundred women that met the study criteria
Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria: At the time of enrollment, the participants must be low-income, null parity, singleton pregnancy with no medical challenges. They also needed to have a female partner/ family member willing to accompany them in labor. They would attend a two day/two hour course, to have all the same material at the bedside during the first and second stage of labor. / excluded were any high risk (placenta previa planned c/section and previously given birth, multiple gestation).
Sample Size: Six hundred in total. Three hundred with the doula and three hundred in the control group.

Frequency distribution, T- test and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel statistics to identify the difference between the two groups. The three tests are used in randomized studies.
