The paper herein provides a critical discussion of evidence based practice (EBP) in nursing. It clearly elaborates on the meaning and definition of EBP as used by nurses as well as the importance of evidence based decision making as it relates to nursing care. It broadly examines the concept of EBP in nursing care and its relevance to nursing practice and to the delivery of quality patient care. Subsequently, the essay will also expound on the broad research methods that are used in evidence based nursing and conclusively show how this evidence can be applied in day to day health care practice.

Nurses are continuously advised to make decisions regarding the care they give to the patients based on the most relevant evidence that is valid and available at the time. Like most of the other health disciplines, nursing is also shifting from the traditional intuition-based practice to EBP (Eizenberg, 2010). The importance of EBP in nursing cannot thus be underestimated due to the following reasons.
Evidence based practice helps nurses to provide high quality patient care that is based on the best research and knowledge (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). It is essentially important to use EBP as opposed to making decisions based on traditions, outdated literature, myths and mere advice of colleagues. This way, it improves the health care system since it facilitates consistent decision making based on the best evidence available (Eizenberg, 2010). It helps the nurses to make informed clinical decisions based on updated research and technology therefore enabling them to be more efficient and more accurate in the delivery of health care.
EBP is also important in nursing because it results in better patient outcomes (Beyea & Slattery, 2006). It contributes to greater nurse efficiency and professionalism which helps results in better health outcomes for the patients.
