The profession of nursing involves a variety of different concepts and skills. The ANA Standards of Professional Performance describe a competent level of the behavior in the professional role (page 3 book). These standards help to make sure that nurses provide the best possible care to their patients and so that the nurses know what qualities are needed to meet the professional standards. There is a great importance to the Standards of Professional Performance. By having standards that nurses have to up hold to, there is no question of such standards. They are “law”. Those “laws” are what nurses and student nurses are to abide by. There are ten Standards of Professional Performance. These standards are ethics, education, evidence-based practice and research, quality of practice, communication, leadership, collaboration, professional practice evaluation, resources, environmental health. Of these ten, three have been chosen by a student nurse to discuss. The three chosen were evidence based practice and research, communication, and environmental health.

Evidence based practice can also be defined by the Nursing Outlook as integrating the best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/ family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care. Evidence based practice is a relatively new type of practice. When a student nurse is in the clinical setting they should not rely solely upon what they were taught in the classroom but they should be aware of the current evidence. A student nurse could easily implement evidence based practice by keeping up to date on current and ongoing research, as well as thinking back to other situations that they have observed.
