In evaluating Company Q for social responsibility, I have found that the company has not made a commitment to being completely socially responsible. The definition of Corporate Social Responsibility according to Lord Holme and Richard Watts (2000), “is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large”. The second issue to address is the decision not to donate day-old products for area's food banks and opting to throw the food away instead. With the new ethics program in placed, upper management down to the entry-level employees understanding consequences and what constitute theft and fraud and a well thought out process to donate day old products should help reduce the exposure of possible fraud and theft. Throwing food away that can be donated citing possible employee theft sends a negative message to their employees and the community. Allowing food to be donated will restore the trust and faith throughout the company employees. Company Q needs to improve their own corporate image. Donating food to an area food bank will have a positive impact on the community and show the community the new positive direction the company is going in.
