His father was Gaius Octavius, who was also the first to become a senator, he died when Augustus was only 4 years old. Augustus was short, but handsome and well proportion, although he had beauty his character was said to be cruel when he was young, but later mellowed his temper. He had been appointed pontifex (priest) at the age of fifteen or sixteen, which explains any source of his brutality for he was given responsibility at such a young age. Octavian Augustus served under Julius Caesar in the Spanish expedition of 46 B.C. despite his weak health. He was also to take a senior military command in Caesar’s planned Parthian expedition of 44 B>C> although he was only 18 years old Octavian was with his friends Marcus Agrippa and Marcus Salvidienus Rufus in Appollonia in Epirus completing his academic and military studies, soon news was reached to him about Caesar’s assassination. He immediately returned to Rome, later discovering Caesar had adopted him in his will. But no doubt was he planning to avenge
