Indiana State Museum Essay

The first thing that caught my attention about the Indiana State Museum was that the museum is basically divided into two parts. It is divided into the natural history side and the cultural history side. I found this very interesting, as I had just assumed that everything in the museum was imported, categorized, and stored in similar manors. When you think about it, it makes sense to divide the museum into two parts as it allows the staff members of the two teams to be specialized experts in their fields, rather than to just know a lot about all of this history in the museum. It also makes sense in that obviously historical documents and dinosaur bones will have to be processed and stored in very different ways. I think that everything in the museum really worked for me, and would one day work for a high school history class. Kisha Tandy stated several times that the museum was being renovated to make the exhibits more intractable and engageable. She stressed the importance of kinesthetic learning, but I think the way the museum is currently set up now with the majority of the exhibits having some kind of auditory factor was sufficient for me as a first year college student, and thus should be sufficient for high school students. There were many things that I’ve read directly out of the textbook come to life in the museum. There was a portion about the KKK. There was an exhibit dedicated to the Indiana soldiers in the civil war. We saw an exhibit about immigrants. A Native American exhibit was present. I saw a small exhibit dedicated to Benjamin Henry Harrison, and there were a lot of other things that directly related to out course work in

    I think the coolest thing at the museum were the two displays they had one of which was a simulation of a cell and how small they were I’d say about 95% of the cell was the bed, the second thing they had was a display of an Andersonville prisoner trying to escape by digging a tunnel with a shiv.
