For my cultural event I visited the aSHEville Museum, specifically I went to see the “Her Nobel Words” exhibit. An exhibit honoring sixteen women who have fought to make the world a better place and have been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize. I have visited this museum once before and thought this exhibit would be an interesting and encouraging event to invest my time in. It is also something that relates to the gender discussion in Humanities. The aSHEville Museum focuses on encouraging and promoting positive ideas about women. The exhibit was certainly encouraging and a good gathering of women that have worked hard to see change in the world. Of the 889 people and organization recipients of the Nobel prize only forty-six have been female.

She was convicted to go fight through visions and followed through on her belief that the visions were from God even though it meant losing her life. With this collection of women there are a few who can be related to Joan of Arc. Malala Yousafzal is a young activist, at eleven years old, fighting for the right for girls to attend school. Malala is putting her life in danger sticking to what she believes on this issue, in fact she has already been a victim of a attempted assassination. Though she is lucky to have not lost her life, it shows that both women are willing to give up their lives for their belief. Another person to compare to Joan of Arc is Emily Greene Balch, an American sociologist. She was a important leader of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and through her work she earned the reputation of a “dangerous radical.” Due to this belief that she was a radical she was not acknowledged by the US government. In the same way Joan of Arc was not considered the hero she is today until many years after her death.
