When you hear nurse, what is the first thing you think of?
The first thing that comes to mind is the ability to help people. Just like any career, a nursing career comes with the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s not always like the shows on television and the cute scrubs….
Nursing is a popular career choice among individuals. Many people decided to go to school to become a nurse based on their salary. As a nurse you will be helping others deal with stress while managing your own stress. Nurses are constantly exposed to realities of human suffering and stressful medical emergencies. Nurses have to be able to connect with patients emotionally and understand their needs when they are tired, hurting and frustrated. Death is something nurses deal with, the ability to be empathetic and out yourself in the patient’s/families shoes and feel what they are feeling. Nursing school is tough, nurses have a tough job and therefore need adequate preparation for what lies ahead. Nursing school is difficult and time consuming. While entering nursing school you will probably feel unprepared and let’s face it you will be. Unexpected situations occur all the time, even life or death situations that we never thought we would be responsible for. Every patient, every case is different and each experience will build your knowledge and confidence. Not all patients or family members you deal with are nice. Nurses can and do take a lot of abuse from patients and patients family’s, this might not be intended, but when someone is in pain they are not always pleasant to deal
