During Your Interview What Did You Do Well

During your interview, what did you do well?

In the interview, what I thought I did well was ask questions that pertained to the research topic. In addition, I was able to engage the interviewee. For instance, she was comfortable speaking about the sensitive topic. I communicated effectively with the interviewee. I think having pre-selected questions was helpful with helping the conversation flow naturally. I also applied motivational interviewing techniques during the interview. For instance, I maintain good posture and open body language. I did a job of summarizing at the end of the interview as well.

What will you do differently next interview(s)?

What I would do differently in the next interview is utilize silence and focus the conversation more in the direction of my research topic. In addition, I did cut off the interviewee once because I was focused on my next question. Another thing I would do differently is to listen more and probe more when asking follow up questions. I think I was focused on making sure the few questions that I asked were answered in the interview. Furthermore, I was also constantly checking the time and recorder to make sure the equipment was still working which, could have been distracting for the interviewee.

What are areas of future growth?

For instance, for me being clearer in my questions is an area to work on in the future. Although I did have pre-selected questions I did not focus entirely on those questions. I did fumble a little on my words. In addition, I should have focused more on non-verbal cues. I think this will be helpful in the future to fully understand the person. The other area of future growth is directing the conversation because she would divert from the topic that I was exploring for my research project. However, I did enjoy the fact that she spoke a lot about her life and her eating disorder

During the interview process I found it difficult to take listen to the interviewee, take notes and keep an eye on body language. I’m not sure why this was, maybe because I haven’t conducted too many interviews in this way. The weaknesses I encountered after listening back at my interview is the nervousness I displayed, the pace of my deliverance was fast, and the awkward moments of silence. For most individuals who gets nervous will speak faster than they normally would. Avoiding periods of silence would be something I need to work on, as I tend to compensate the periods of silence with filler words such as ums and ahs. Organization is a strength I attained for this interview. I developed a step-by-step practical template using the episodic history…

The biggest surprise during the interview was to find out that Deborah still faces struggles with asking others for help. Many times when people are higher up in a company they are glad to delegate their work to other employees. I felt helpful in the fact that I was able to use information that we were taught in lab and class to somewhat flip the switch and guide her. I reminded her that it is not showing weakness to ask others for help, something I also have to remind myself sometimes. Another surprise is that she still faces weaknesses with her communication skills regardless of her age and work/life experience.…

For this assignment, I interviewed Felicia Low, a Program Advisor at the School of Public Health. This interview taught me a lot about myself and my interpersonal communication skills when it comes to communication on a one-on-one basis. Prior to the interview, I was a bit nervous since I did not know Mrs. Low personally and never communicated with her face-to-face. I prepared to conduct the interview in a way that it would feel like a normal conversation and not a regular interview. For example, I would not always say things from the interview questions that I prepared, I would sometimes ask a question on piece of information that she would share.…

Despite my discomfort, I think I did a good job maintaining an open posture throughout the interview. A major personal discovery I made was that I tend to be expressive in my face. I noticed that I was doing pressing my lips together and at some points my eyes widened. This was namely due to the uncomfortable areas of the interview such as Betty beginning to sing and the moments when she was highly upset. During those points of the interview, I felt as if I kind of lost some control over the flow of the interview.…

I wish I used less fillers and mazes and was more precise. Sometimes, I would use too much selective attention, for example I focused so much on the interviewee’s family relationships and reciprocal treatment, that I forgot to ask about her resentment for putting others first. I also could have questioned her coping skills regarding her family’s laxity. Whereas in interview one, I believe my strengths included providing great minimal encouragers, nodding my head, counselor congruence, and showing greater interest.…
