Think about a woman in your life who you care deeply about. Now, picture that woman being pushed, punched, thrown against walls, and being mentally, physically, and psychologically abused. Although the damage is not being done to you personally, it still affects you, right?
The leading cause of injuries to women is domestic abuse-more than car accidents, muggings, and rape combined3. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of his/her color, ethnicity, economic status, sexual orientation, race, gender etc.
Although it mostly affects women, domestic abuse can happen to men too; in fact, “in America, every 37.8 seconds a man falls victim to domestic abuse”7. Domestic abuse affects same-sex couples and transgenders too; 1 out of 4 same-sex couples have experienced domestic violence, and 1 in 5 trans people experienced domestic abuse at home8.
What exactly is domestic abuse? According to domesticviolencelondon.nhs.uk, domestic abuse is “any incident of threatening behavior, violence, or abuse between adults who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality.” Domestic abuse happens even in families- among the people who you are supposed to trust and feel the most safe around. This goes to show that there are no boundaries that domestic abuse will not cross.
