Imagine that your company recently hired a new recruit for your team and have been working with this new individual for several weeks now (Mind Tools Editorial Team, 2015). Questions and concerns about the individual start to rise about how well he fits into the current team’s culture. The new employee’s values are very different from those of your team in addition to the organization as a whole. He wants to climb the corporate ladder and is only self-interested in his own career development. As a product of his personal values he’s ambitious, ruthless, and only focusses on projects that either build his career or achieve a public win. On the opposite side of the spectrum, your core team members are passionate about working on a team which helps each other. They value teamwork, and are always willing to give a helping hand or stay late if someone is behind on an important deadline. The team’s values has led to a culture built on trust, friendliness, and mutual respect within the team. The introduction of the highly competitive new recruit to your team has revealed a problem in compatibility of his core career values and the collective core values of the team. However, the key stakeholders responsible for implementing and promoting diversity within the workplace are the leadership and management of the organization. It is their responsibility to consider what policies, practices, and ways of thinking within their organization’s culture impact different groups.
