Many children still today ask themselves the question of "Who looks like me?" when watching a movie. The children are searching for someone who they can relate to, someone who resonates with them the most, however that can not be found with the lack of representation in movies. Diversity in media, books, toys, and other mediums is an aspect in America that needs reformation. Since the United States is seen as the melting pot of the world, one would believe erroneously that the United State is teeming with diversity with respect to the formerly stated mediums. I believe that diversity is imperative throughout our everyday lives and in media. Diversity in media, writing, and toys serves a prodigious role in learning self love. I can understand the hurt another person of color feels when they are treated differently than non person of color friends. I can give advice when another minority feels diffidence towards telling a caucasian friend that what they just said or did was racist. Developing in a country that was founded with the practice of institutionalized racism, I always find myself encouraging other minorities while also being helped myself. I often found myself reprimanding friends and family for racist jokes. I recognized that those reciting the tasteless jokes may be ignorant of the people they are insulting and how damaging their words are. I began not only scolding them for their behavior, but also explaining why their behavior would be problematic. I remember specifically a time when my white friends wanted to dress up as the Jackson 5. Ignorant of the baleful history of blackface, my friends painted their skin to match the Jackson's. I explained to them how blackface prevented African American people from being on television in the 1950s-1960s and how it promoted less diversity in media. After my explanation of blackface, my friends apologized and realized how harmful that action could have been. Through small acts of speaking up, I believe that more diversity in a myriad of mediums is inevitable. I believe that diversity is not what separates one from another, but rather what brings us together to learn new ideas and to form a new respect for our

We got into a conversation about it, where I tried to explain why her statement was incorrect and she tried to explain what she had meant. I think we eventually started to agree and she understood what I was meaning to say, but once we got home we let it go. I do not know if the best option is to let these little instances of racism go, but I did, honestly it was easier. I noticed that when I was talking to her, I was using examples from the readings and videos I am doing for this class. I am glad that I had these examples, because I think it made the already sticky conversation easier to understand for both of us.…

When looking at both concept of race and nation in media it is a common theme that media stays commonly patriotic to the country that it is filmed/made in. Diversity in America has been rising every year. Lately the country’s diverseness has skyrocketed since the legalization of gay marriage. The media is meant to represent the diversity of the country and represent the common people and the number of gay and colored people has shot up immensely within the last 20 years but the media has failed to keep up with this. Most people, white, straight and usually male, feel that the media represents them perfectly and it does. But for the people that are colored, transgender, gay or sometimes female feel that the media does not have enough representation for them and they feel as though the country does not acknowledge the fact that they exist.…

Has Racism Changed in the United States since the 1900’s? Many of us have friends of different races and don’t think of how lucky we are to have them. Back in the 1930’s, it was very hard for friends who weren’t both the same race to stay friends. For example, Blacks weren’t accepted as people, more or less, slaves with more rights. As the years went by, around the 1950’s, 1960’s…

Diversity on American Television Since 1968, there have been dozens of programs on American TV featuring a relatively diverse array of black families. But for many years within this span of time, there has been what has felt like a drought of Black imagery, a “whiteout,” if you will. Many of our shows essentially came and went, while programs featuring White families continued to dominate the airwaves. Today, however, Black faces are finally all over the network and cable television lineups, and megahits such as ABC’s black-ish, a sitcom featuring the Johnson clan, and Fox’s Empire, with the infamous Lyons, have Hollywood scrambling to find the next hot Black family for prime-time TV. Blowing record ratings out of the box dduring season one, Empire became the first program in the history of Nielson’s People Meters to grow in total viewers with each episode following its premiere.…

I enjoyed hearing from Mellody Hobson. The message she sends is powerful and articulates what all white people need to hear, and practice. I agree with her assertion that there is a dominant discourse about talking about race and ethnicity and I believe that most white people are afraid to broach the subject because a) either they believe there is no racism or ethnic discrimination b) they feel a sense of shame and guilt about what they think and feel towards those who are ethnically diverse or c) they fear feeling uncomfortable and do not want to acknowledge their privilege. My experience talking about gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, Indigeneity, social class, age, ability, or religion in my personal life is quite open and conversations I feel comfortable having; when any of these identity factors arise in a conversation I tend to be the first to acknowledge the identity factor, show curiosity and ask questions. Furthermore, I attempt to…

When I think of the news I picture mainstream media stations like CNN or Fox News going over what has happened in the world as short bits to fill the time slots. I don’t picture certain reporters, just the big name network presenting what is happening in the world, with different levels of bias. To me the news is any type of media that informs the audience of what is going on in the world, whether it is about celebrities or current events. It wasn’t until this essay that I accepted that I include celebrity gossip in my definition of the news.…
