I can understand the hurt another person of color feels when they are treated differently than non person of color friends. I can give advice when another minority feels diffidence towards telling a caucasian friend that what they just said or did was racist. Developing in a country that was founded with the practice of institutionalized racism, I always find myself encouraging other minorities while also being helped myself. I often found myself reprimanding friends and family for racist jokes. I recognized that those reciting the tasteless jokes may be ignorant of the people they are insulting and how damaging their words are. I began not only scolding them for their behavior, but also explaining why their behavior would be problematic. I remember specifically a time when my white friends wanted to dress up as the Jackson 5. Ignorant of the baleful history of blackface, my friends painted their skin to match the Jackson's. I explained to them how blackface prevented African American people from being on television in the 1950s-1960s and how it promoted less diversity in media. After my explanation of blackface, my friends apologized and realized how harmful that action could have been. Through small acts of speaking up, I believe that more diversity in a myriad of mediums is inevitable. I believe that diversity is not what separates one from another, but rather what brings us together to learn new ideas and to form a new respect for our
