For example, in the Conservative article he states, “Violence would break out and because the criminal was the only one with a gun, it was like shooting fish in a barrel- the law abiding citizen had no way to fight back” (Fair). In other words, he’s saying if people don’t have the right to keep and use fire-arms when needed then they are useless to saving their own life. By writing this statement, he is implying into the readers mind, what happens when the closest cop with rights to protection isn’t there fast enough? He does not include any liberal intake on his proposal on gun ownership; in fact, he completely disregards it in his article. The Liberal article uses a very similar approach in their one-sided ideology as he says, “How many Americans must die before we rethink the 2nd Amendment” (Thomas). He has no shame in calling it out as liberals see it, he believes that enough is enough and is simply stating aloud; how many more people have to die before there is a change in gun control. During the process of conveying the writers’ separate messages, a good amount of bias labeling occurs between the two viewpoints. The conservative view point uses words and quotes from positive/believable sources such as the president himself as he states, “It’s a high priority and will continue to be until we start to see more progress on this issue in this town” (Fair). Fair includes president Obama into his article to use an expert speaker, but Obama’s statement does not make it clear what perspective him or Fair are speaking from. Because of the sentence, he chose to quote from the president it makes the reader unable to identify if he is coming from a Liberal or Conservative standpoint. As for the Liberal article, they use a different approach in bias labeling as he does label himself a Liberal but he fails to mention the conservative outlook. He writes, “While many patriots and freedom minded individuals already know that most on the hard left want a full out gun ban”(Thomas). He speaks from a Liberal perspective as he uses more extreme sounding labels such as “hard left” to show the reader that he is coming from either a Democrat or a Liberal perspective because both of those representations use “left” as terms to describe themselves.
