Different Types Of Love In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Every type of love has appeared in literature at least once. Authors use love to represent a relationship between characters or just to help develop the plot. Some types of love are unrequited love, parental love, and lastly romantic love. Scientifically, romantic love is when the chemicals in the brain kick in and make the person feel an emotional high full of exhilaration, passion, and elation when the person is with their lover. When a person is in love they tend to overlook faults, conflict and abuse. Even though it gives an emotional high, romantic love is the most dangerous love as it influences people to make irrational and impulsive decisions.

When they are in Capulet’s orchard with Juliet on the balcony, Juliet asks what Romeo wants and he answers, “The exchange of thy loves faithful vow for mine” (II.ii.127). Even though they have just met, their decision to get married conveys that, when people are in romantic love, they make rash choices that they may regret later on. Especially since they barely know each other, this scene demonstrates that romantic love is often impulsive and risky. Another instance is where Romeo is banished and he threatens “In what vile part of this anatomy/ Doth my name lodge? Tell me, that I may sack/ The hateful mansion” (III.iii.106-108). Romeo deciding to kill himself was mainly because he will no longer be able to see Juliet anymore supports how their romantic love only leads to careless decisions, not beneficial. If he was not involved with Juliet, he wouldn’t have wanted to stab himself and in fact he probably would not have had such a problem with his banishment.
