Sometimes in stories, the love is simply romantic, but there are countless other examples throughout literature where the love is purely platonic. In life, there are all types of love, parental love, the love of family and friendship, and even more unpleasant types of love, such as unrequited love. One of the most famous love stories being Romeo and Juliet, a story written by William Shakespeare that incorporates not only the romantic love shared between Romeo and Juliet but the values of loyalty and friendship.
“These violent delights often have violent ends.” (2:VI:9) This is one of Shakespeare's more popular quotes and has much to do with romantic love. For example, Romeo had a very close friendship with both Benvolio and Mercutio. The closeness of their friendships is often exhibited through the dialogue. For instance, in Act 3 Scene 1 Line 116 Romeo says “Alive in triumph, and Mercutio slain? / Away to heaven respective lenity, / and fire-eyed fury be actually have many my conduct now!” In this scene, Tybalt has just killed Mercutio, and Romeo is feeling such remorse for his best friend’s death, that knowing the repercussions it will have, kills Tybalt to revenge
