Project Management Culture: Case Study on DeTech
The case study, “What Helps Us Come This Far?” (Milosevic, Patanakul, and Srivannaboon 2010), is an excellent example of positive project and program culture contributing to extraordinary achievements for the Defense Support Program (DSP) at the global defense and technology company DeTech. Within DeTech, the DSP is a major program of the Space Technology sector, and partners with the government to produce satellites and other space system products, information, and services. Sally Stonewell, a program manager for DeTech, along with her military program manager counterpart, Lt. This partnership includes the management and sharing of knowledge, which benefits the program’s mission. Trust and transparency are credited with the team’s ability to work well together, as information is not withheld, and effective, open communications are ingrained in daily activities of the program, therefore knowledge is easily collected and shared among collocated teams. The established organization culture at DeTech also contributes significantly to the motivation of the employees. As Mueller notes, “corporate culture represents the source of values and beliefs that influence organizational behavior”, therefore it can be concluded that the organizational culture influences the program culture. The implementation of daily meetings or briefings can keep teams abreast of critical information, schedule changes, and issue logs, but can also be an opportunity for continuous alignment of goals, knowledge-sharing, and leadership or coaching. In the case study, a key to the program management process was to have a process owner (p. 471). A process owner can collect and document best practices and lessons learned to be shared throughout the organization or within the team itself.
The company culture at DeTech that motivates employees includes promotion from within, an employee development program that included education and training, regular team recognition and awards, a mentorship program and career planning, an on-site daycare facility, profit sharing, and performance bonuses are benefits that motivate team members, contribute to professional development, and recognize individual or team success.
