The Dependence upon Characters in The Hunger Games

Being able to survive the Hunger Games independently is almost impossible. In Suzanne Collins novel, survival is shown by the advice of a mentor and the help and dependence of the competitors during the games. The main character Katniss Everdeen is competing with twelve girls including her and twelve other boys for the game of death. Although Rue is the youngest in the games, she is still worthy of being an ally with Katniss. Haymicth Abernathy is portrayed as the town drunk that cannot be taken seriously and not a good mentor because he is drunk all the time. However, as the games progress Haymitch helps Katniss along the way by being a supportive mentor and campaigning for her. Peeta is

Katniss ' dependence on Peeta is shown when Peeta is able to convince the career wolf pack to wait under the tree instead of killing her individually Katniss hears Peeta saying: “Sick and disoriented, I 'm able to form only one thought: Peeta Mellark just saved my life.” (Collins, 194). Peeta shows bravery and his knowledge of the career wolf pack. Haymicth is the winner of the 50th Hunger Games; Haymitch mentors the two chosen people at the reaping each year until someone else wins in district twelve. Haymitch contributed to Katniss ' survival by gathering wealthy sponsors to send as many supplies needed by Katniss such as food or medication for an illness or any burn or cut. Rue stated that Katniss has very supportive sponsors by saying: “You have good sponsors," she says longingly.” (Collins, 201). Katniss is able to achieve good sponsors due to Haymitch, the advice Haymitch gives to Katniss allows her to think of how to act in the games in order to have help and support when she desperately needs it. The sponsors are able to provide Katniss with the right supplies when they are needed. Katniss would have not been able to go far in the games because without the sponsor 's gifts it would be hard for Katniss to heal her burn from the fireball attack from the game makers on her own because she does not have the right supplies around her. Without the burning cream sent to Katniss by sponsors Katniss would have not been able to make it far in the games. Haymitch also sends important messages to Katniss but in a way the gamekeepers do not understand but Katniss does. Katniss states: “Maybe he 's sending you a message, it says. A message. Saying what? Then I know. There 's only one good reason Haymitch could be withholding water from me.

In the Hunger Games, the most important similarities the movie shared with the book was making Peeta initiate the idea of him and Katniss being lovers. This is so significant because, without this, most of the main events in the book and movie would never have taken place. For one, this angle would have left Katniss to be just another face in the crowd, not making her stand out, which also meant fewer sponsors, decreasing her chances of survival. However, the most important reason for this is because Katniss would have left Peeta to die when he needed her the most and she would not have been able to plant the small seeds of defiance against the capital. In the movie and novel, the games take a surprising turn when an announcement goes out that…
