A DPT student’s desire and commitment to learn is arguably the most indicative measure of professionalism. As I pursue a degree in physical therapy, I am not only pursuing a degree, but a profession. It is important to engage beyond the requirements needed to satisfy the degree program. Every class, every assignment, every test should be viewed through the lens of a learner eager to comprehend, retain, and apply the content. We gain knowledge from those we respect. Consequently, students should bestow respect to professors, instructors, and all involved in their academic pursuit. Not only should students respect superiors, but they have an obligation to respect their patients. Working in a clinic, I have had the privilege of interacting with many patients. Through respectful interactions, I developed meaningful working relationships with many of them. Because of our mutual respect, my patients were more willing to complete their home exercise program though they disliked it. This allowed for faster, more complete recoveries and decreased the risk for future injury. Respect establishes a cooperative therapist-patient relationship which enables us effectively care for our patients and allows us to further our own intellectual
