I not only wish to work directly with patients to improve their standard of living, but I also desire to tackle disparities faced by larger, underdeserving populations. I hope to learn about what I will be able to do with my platform as a physical therapist to address these disparities. Next, I want to discuss cultural competency and ethics and how we as healthcare providers can ensure exceptional service while respecting the beliefs and wishes of patrons, no matter what they are. For example, as a student trainer of Injury and Prevention Care at UNL, I worked a rugby game once when this middle eastern woman with a hijab went down with an apparent knee injury. I asked if it was okay to palpate her leg, but to my surprise, she declined treatment because I was a male. Luckily, my coworker who was a female was working the game with me and provided care. However, what if a scenario arises where a patron with similar beliefs needs CPR and the only way to save her was to violate her beliefs? My curiosities will spark engaging conversations with my peers, student mentors and faculty members, whose contacts I will retain to have as resources to guide me along my journey. I will create lifelong relationships with the other students in the program, and I await many unforgettable experiences.
