My hips are uneven, my ribcage is twisted, and my waist falls differently on each side of my body. When I trace my fingers down my spine, I follow the winding path of three, 50 degree curves. For most of my adolescence, I strapped myself into a back brace for 23 hours a day. I remember the painful purple bruises from its tight, velcro straps, the embarrassment of being held aside at security lines, the misery of wearing five layers in the summer, and the taunts of one of my classmates who punched me and shouted, “Hard back! Hard back!”…

The sport of bull riding takes a lot of core balance; so many of the riders do yoga to help. “Broken bones are a major issue for bull riders, and muscle tears are too, which is another reason why these athletes try to stay as lean as possible” (Lewis par.15). Most of the injuries that happen in the sport of bull riding are loin and shoulder injuries because of how much the rider gets pulled around by the bull. The famous saying in bull riding is "It's not if you get hurt, it's when," (Clark par. 1).…
Altering support surface is an effective technique for balance training. A variety of balance boards (also called wobble board or ankle disc) is commonly used as one of the devices for rehabilitation program to facilitate neuromuscular control. Literature have shown that exercising under unstable condition can regain muscle activity [1–3], muscle onset latency [4], proprioception [5–7], and balance [8–10]. Although training with balance board can conduct by double or single leg, one- foot balancing is challenge and specific for unilateral lower limb injury. To study unipedal postural control during balancing on a wobble surface might provide beneficial information for rehabilitation.…
Finally, the Army Physical Fitness Training program is a one size fits all program which does not address the varying levels of fitness found on an ODA. Individualized training programs are THOR3’s answer to this challenge. While the principles of fitness coupled with the strength coaches training and experience apply to all THOR3 training programs, the imagination is the only limit to what program the THOR3 strength coaches can generate. This is especially relevant for Team Sergeants that worry that using the THOR3 program is “pawning off” the traditionally Team Sergeant’s responsibility of planning and executing Detachment physical training. Because the THOR3 trainers are flexible, a Team Sergeant can present his fitness goals and have…
Ideokinesis, a practice that provides physical benefits in terms of fluidity in movement, posture, and body alignment through the process of imagery and visualization, utilizes multiple techniques in order to train specific body systems such as the skeletal and nervous systems to adapt to newer and healthier neuromuscular methods. A significant mechanism used to teach the benefits of Ideokinesis is the 9 lines of movement. Reflecting on and working towards stabilizing the 9 lines of movement allows for the distribution of strength and equal balance in one’s body parts, done mainly by a prominent sense of imagining certain scenarios along with some physical movement. The 9 lines of movement consists of the first line going from the big toe to…
One example of how geometry is used in physical therapy can be seen in the article “Can Spinal Surgery Be Prevented By Aggressive Strengthening Exercises? A Prospective Study of Cervical and Lumbar Patients”. The study presented in the article, shows people who could benefit more from physical therapy than a spinal surgery. Each patient had to have a physician’s recommendation and could not have a medical condition that restricts excercise in order to qualify for the 10 week outpatient study.…
