I have been extremely fortunate in that I have been given many opportunities, academic and otherwise, to succeed in life. Unfortunately, however, I suffer from a physical condition known as Sever’s which has had a large impact on my extracurricular activities. Sever’s is a bone disorder that results from swelling around the growth plate in the heel. Occurring at the onset of puberty, Sever’s typically lasts for only a few years. I was not that fortunate, however, and suffered symptoms from third grade to my sophomore year of high school.…
My knees shook and my hands twisted as I looked around the clean, polished, well-lit room of MidAtlantic Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation. The light gray rafters and fans of the high ceiling would become very familiar to me as I executed the repetitive exercises, mainly on my back. While the room was undecorated and rather blank, it felt bright and welcoming due to the energetic, optimistic attitude of the occupants. Everyone there, therapist or patient, was working towards a goal, making the environment that much more positive and…

In the year 1868, a disease that affects the central nervous system was identified. In the studies of Jean-Martin Charcot, he named the disease that would eventually become known as “Multiple Sclerosis”. Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is an autoimmune disease that makes your body attack the covering of the axons of the nerves, known as the myelin sheath, in the brain and along the spinal cord. This can cause a disruption in the communication between the brain and the rest of the body. ("Multiple Sclerosis Information Page.")…

And because Mrs. Krenz, I now know how to deal with my homework even if I get migraines and if I didn’t sleep very well. These two people gave me the tools to succeed in school and life even with my disability that my concussion…
I realized the true potential that physical therapy after witnessing how beneficial it was for my mother after herniating multiple discs and suffering from sciatica. Over time, the didactic advice and exercise training that my mother received from her physical therapist gradually helped her get back on her feet. After observing a physical therapist treat various patients who were successfully able to recover from their physical infirmities through rehabilitation, I was fascinated by this field and started pursuing a career in physical therapy. Some of the classes I attended during college were provided to implement the students’ repertoire for working with patients of all ages, which is a steppingstone to the kinds of patients I might encounter as a physical therapist.…
It was a rainy Sunday in February when I invited my best friend, Betty over to my house. As we were conversing, the usual pain in my lower back struck me as I tried finding a comfortable position. Betty noted the discomfort on my face and mentioned that we go to the hospital. I gently dismissed her worries…
I could not walk and I was still in excruciating pain. My mom decided to take me to my regular doctor, where he declared that my leg was in fact, broken. Doctor Bell placed me in a boot to hold my leg in place and instructed me to use crutches. I spent three months unable to participate in any physical activity, including tumbling. When I was finally released, I slowly progressed back into tumbling classes, but all that would go through my head before I started my passes was the fear of falling again and getting hurt.…
