The purpose of this systemic review was to determine the level of evidence with hip strengthening or neuromuscular training and the effect on frontal plane knee kinematics and kinetics. Female athletes have a high risk of ACL injury. Athletes who are runners or play sports that involve running and jumping are at the highest risk for noncontact injuries. This is associated to the position of the knee during landing. Females typically land with a valgus force to the knee. This is a weak position for the knee and it cannot support the force and therefore, buckles and the ACL is injured. The theory this study is testing is if the hip musculature can support the knee. If a person has good muscle strength in the hip and gluteus medius, that may help with the valgus force and reduce the amount of injury. There is evidence to show that when adding hip strengthening exercises to a prevention program, it helps reduce the risk of ACL injury. …show more content…
The databases used to find the articles were SportDiscus, PubMed, and CINAHL. To be included in the study the articles must have females who were not previously injured, studies that investigated hip strengthening or a hip neuromuscular control program, a primary outcome that focused on the frontal plane knee mechanics, and only peer-reviewed studies. All the studied were evaluated using level of evidence. They used the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine 2011 Levels of Evidence Tool to rank the articles. This ranked the articles on a level 1 to level 5 scale with level 1 being the highest. The search started with 414 articles and ended with 14 studies used. Six of the articles were at a level 2 for an evidence level and the other eight were ranked at a level
