Which again, I related to because I only had a week of independent living under my belt. They spoke of how they relied on each other while also being independent. How they also participated in supported employment, where they would go into the community and work.
Supported employment is a service in which the Core Services places a client in a community integrated position of employment. Not only does this enhance each of the clients’ vocational and social skills, but it allows the community to see the contributions these individuals can make when given the opportunity. A person with disabilities is then seen by the community as more valuable and bloom from the label of being disabled.
If you walk into the office building of the Core Services, inclusion is plastered all over the walls. As you speak with the staff you hear passion and love. As you speak with the clients you hear confidence and potential. To teach each one of my students how to be responsible and take ownership for their actions, be resilient and believe in themselves, and work together to create something greater than what they could achieve on their own. To be independent but also value each other whether a student has a disability or not. To desire a deeper understanding for knowledge and each other. To accomplish this, I must have high standards and expectations for all my students, and I must provide them plenty of group, active learning opportunities through problem based learning and guided discovery.
Although I was at the Core Services to offer my help, they opened my eyes and helped me understand the members in my community who have disabilities more than anyone or anything has in my entire life. Just from helping prepare for a Christmas party and taking a stroll through the park with the ladies who are clients of the Core Services and talking with the staff has allowed me to value members of the community who have disabilities at such a greater
