Community health nursing is a unique field in the nursing profession that offers an opportunity to observe individuals as part of a community. Observation allows nurses to collect and analyze pertinent information that aids in the identification and prevention of illness as well as the promotion of health to individuals in a given location. Community Health also allows nurses to identify the specific healthcare needs of individuals after leaving an acute care setting. Being aware of the environmental factors/ barriers that influence the overall health guides nurses in identifying and acquiring the resources needed to promote a successful recovery. Environmental observation can tell you about what the people in the community find important. Having a poorly maintained environment may indicate the focus is on meeting basic human needs. (Maurer & Smith, 2013, p. 406). The neighborhood of El Cajon is a residential community composed primarily of older low income apartments in decent condition with side streets composed of single family homes. There was a liquor store or convenience store on every street corner as well as various fast food chains. This observation can alert the Community health nurse to assess the nutritional status and alcohol intake of members in the community to determine if it is a community health problem. The street signs and traffic lights were in working order, and traffic was slightly congested near freeway entrances and exits. The primary mode of transportation was by private cars, however some people used public transportation. The environment was quiet with no major construction taking place. The homeless community was present outside of various liquor stores, the local park, and alleyways which appeared unkempt with inadequate lighting.
