Not only should health promotion be implemented by the health care provider, but it is crucial that public policies acknowledge the way in which health is affected by education, housing, industry, social welfare, and environmental planning (McMurray & Clendon, 2015). Agency and community nurses must also approach health care with a holistic approach, especially when there is awareness that community members lack basic necessities, knowledge and experience (Bailie, McDonald, Stevens, Guthridge & Brewster, 2011). The nurse treats patients by not only providing general health care methods, but also encouraging lifestyle adjustments to enable recovery and prevention (Yi-erh, Sendall, Fleming & Lidstone, 2013). These resources may include recreational facilities, town halls, support centres, refuge shelters or community gardens. Besides the existence of the resources, it is important that a community is welcome, comfortable and allowed easy access to such places. These resources are beneficial to the social determinants of health and, although they are not directly involved in prevention or maintenance of specific disabilities, they play a role in improving psychological and physical health (McMurray & Clendon, 2015). Nurses working in rural regions with Indigenous sufferers of ARF and RHD are responsible for promoting these resources. A key reason for nurses to promote such resources is the fact that it enables the individual to partake in activities outside of the home, with emphasis on adolescents (Yi-erh, et al., 2013). ARF and RHD sufferers often have unhealthy living conditions and, although this remains, the patient is participating in healthy activities in healthy environments. Not only should the nurse be aware of these local facilities, he/she must be aware of and be an advocate for the programs that exist to assist in supporting ARF and RHD
