I have seen first-hand how children can go from getting above average grades in math, to subpar. My son used to enjoy school, now he thinks high school is a waste of time and doesn’t like how the teachers are teaching, and who can blame him. If a person can find the right answer quicker, why should they be forced to use a more complicated approach. Proponents of this initiative feel it gets students ready for college and jobs. Companies want efficient workers. However, if someone has a way to get the job done faster with the same result, then why require them to perform multiple, complicated steps that ends of getting that same result? My daughter is in kindergarten and she is not enjoying it as much as preschool. She loves science, and more emphasis is being focused on learning so many site words, reading from a certain set of books, drawing blocks to perform math functions, and working from applications on the computer, tablet, or smartphone. Kindergarteners only go to school a little over three hours each weekday, and all this information the kids have to learn is packed into these three hours, which leaves hardly any time for other important learning opportunities like physical education, art, or science. Do they really need to be on these technologies so much? How are they supposed to express themselves creatively when they are being forced to complete so many hours on these technological devices? Not every kid is the same. Kids have different learning styles, and likes or dislikes. This is what makes everyone unique and contributes to our diverse culture. Common Core learning is the most destructive practice to rob children of their ingenuity and creative ways of thinking. Teachers should be able to teach the children based on the how the child learns, not some set of standards mandated for the whole nation. Nowadays, it’s all about testing and teaching to pass
