However, the physician - nurse relationship is not the only one that is threatened by these behaviors. Longo (2010) reported that disruptive behaviors often lead to even more stress for nurses than any acts of aggression from physicians or patients. As mentioned earlier, yelling, insulting others, or a refusal to carry out duties are among the most common types of behaviors reported. The targets of such behavior are often coworkers with less status than the offending individual, as exemplified by the relationships between senior nurses and newly graduated nurses (Longo, 2010). Various articles and literature emphasize that bullying is an ongoing problem in the healthcare setting.…

The result of this altercation led to D.B. expressing feelings of anger towards the staff who denied her privileges and sadness as this was her last day before discharge and was worried her discharge may be compromised due to this event. This combination of feelings led to D.B. secluding herself in her room.…

    T. Jasmine (2009) discuses two important aspects of therapeutic communication- listening and exploring. Listening as a therapeutic communication technique demonstrates that the nurse is genuinely interested in the patient. When listening to a patient the nurse and nursing student needs to be aware of how their body actions are being portrayed. Posture, facial expressions, and eye contact can be perceived in a positive or negative way to the patient (para. 12). One of the viewpoints on listening mentioned in the journal is a reference from Stickley and Freshwater (2006) discussing how listening is something that the nurse needs to realize within themselves in order to improve communication skills: “listening to oneself and being constantly aware of ones own thoughts and feelings, posture and actions is vital in improving ones skills of listening to others” (Jasmine, 2009, para.…
