This year it is estimated that 20.2 million students are presently enrolled in a college or university in the United States. Why do so many people seek a higher education? There are so many reasons people pursue a Higher Education, but in the essay “College is a waste of time and money”, Caroline Bird argues the majority of students are not there for the right reasons. The Purpose of her essay was to make the reader intensely consider whether or not college is a wise decision. she takes a strong viewpoint that college is a bad idea. Caroline argues that college is a financially poor investment, which results in unhappiness that does not prepare new adults for the rest of their lives in the “real world”. She supports her claims with strong, logical statistics and examples, but fails to truly persuade the reader because her arguments are one sided. She lacks the confrontation of opposing view points, thus allowing for too many holes in her statements.
Many students and their parents believe college is a smart financial decision, because once you graduate you will have the necessary skills to obtain a job with a fair wage. Caroline pointed out that is not always the case, you are not guaranteed a job after graduation. She included the statistic that out of thirty student psychology majors only 5 had jobs relating to there major after they graduated.
