Clinical Professionals: The Importance Of Collaboration

According to Harmic (2014), consultation is an interaction between two professionals when one clinical professional requests the assistance from another who is recognized as an expertise in handling a problem. Consultation is an important aspect and core competence of advanced practice nursing, so APNs use consultation to offer clinical expertise to other colleagues, as a specialty consultant, or to seek additional information to enhance their own practice, patient care and patient outcome (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). Clinial supervision is defined by Barron and White as relationship between a more experienced and more novice nurse where the expected outcome is to assist the less-experienced nurse in the professional development of knowledge, skills, and autonomy (Hamric et al., 2014). Collaboration is a dynamic, interpersonal process in which two or more individuals make a commitment to each other to interact authentically and constructively to solve problems issues (Hamric et al., 2014). Collaboration may be the sharing accountability and responsibility and help each other to quickly attain identified objectives, purposes, or results. Consultation may be the interaction between two specialists where one provides his/ her expertise in a particular field to some other one (Hamric et al., 2014). For example, consultation happens once the APN requests the advice or opinion of a physician or other health care team member to enhance patient care, clinical skills and confidence. Also, physicians or other health care team member as well as APN have responsibility to collaborate for the best patient care and outcome.
