We can respond to crisis and trauma by showing love and compassion just as Jesus did for all of us when he died on the cross. Processing crisis and pressing forward can be extremely challenging for families, it is an unfamiliar pain for those who lose loved ones and the only safety net they're ever had. Agencies such as FEMA, Red Cross and The Salvation Army (just to name a few) provide disaster relief for both man-made and natural disasters. Volunteers come together to provide food, shelter, health and mental health services to help families and communities. Mental health services are especially important during times of crisis.
What are the three most important things you learned about trauma response during mass disasters (either natural or manmade)?
-I was reminded that trauma looks different for everyone experiencing the disaster, it is very common for one person to experience PTSD, while another would not. "...most people do not develop PTSD even when faced with horrifying trauma, so there must be certain predisposing factors such as genetic makeup, childhood trauma..." (Kanel, 2015).
-Perception of the precipitating event leads to emotional distress, which can intensify if help isn't received immediately, for eg. Hurricane
