All my life, I was so intrigued by natural disasters and the impact they had on our world. But I never thought I was going to be apart of one of the worst hurricanes to hit the Atlantic coast. It may be almost five years since Hurricane Sandy swallowed my small beach town, but I still have yet to completely recover.
Times weren’t at the greatest. It happened right around my parent’s brutal and long divorce and it had only been a year since my dad moved into his two bedroom “beach shack”. He was finally settling in and was so accomplished with how far he came. My dad was once again feeling satisfied with his life, but in a matter of weeks this was all quickly shattered.

My hometown "down the shore" had fallen apart, but the community came together like it has never been before. There was absolutely no time for selfish people and everyone had depended on each other. This had a major impact on my outlook of life and to never take anything for granted, an important life lesson everyone should follow by because you never know what is going to happen.
Years later, I still appreciate the little things and always realize how lucky I am compared to others, even if it's just having a roof above my head. Contributing to the community means so much to me, even when it is little things. This experience taught me to always have an altruistic attitude and how to be apart of a truly united community. It also influenced my drive to learn more about people’s interactions with the world and the effect of the environment, which lead to my passion in marine
