Chicken Egg Yolk Immunoglobulin (IgY)
Chicken Egg Yolk Immunoglobulin (IgY) is an antibody present in high concentrations in the egg yolk of chicken eggs. It is also produced by other birds and reptiles (Xu, et al., 2011). Egg laying hens usually deposit the large quantities of serum IgY in the egg yolk before laying eggs. These antibodies protect the developing chicken embryo from the potential disease agents (Xu, et al., 2011).
When hens are immunized against certain pathogens, they produce large quantities of IgY that are responsive to the specific antigen (pathogen) that causes a particular disease that they are immunized against (Xu, et al., 2011). Medical researchers have carried out research on IgY and its potential uses in the prevention and treatment of various zoonotic diseases. They have found out that IgY is effective against numerous pathogens that cause diseases in humans and animals (Xu, et al., 2011). Such pathogens are Pseudomonas spp., Staphylococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Yersinia ruckeri, Edwardsiella tarda, Escherichia coli, human rotaviruses, and bovine coronavirus (Xu, et al., 2011).
Advantages of Chicken Egg Yolk Immunoglobulin (IgY)
Today scientists have a preference for IgY to mammalian antibodies since IgY is available and can be produced in large quantities (Xu, et al., 2011). Numerous immunized hens are capable of laying eggs on a daily basis that contain large quantities of IgY (Xu, et al., 2011).
