Which Came First Summary

Before reading the essay, Which Came First, by Francine Prose, I had assumed the question “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Was a meaningless conundrum, but now I see there is a deeper meaning to gain from it. I gained a deeper understanding by Francine explaining most people do not remember where they first heard the conundrum, a scientific explanation and that the question it self was not what was truly important.
I started to gain a deeper understanding when Francine said most people do not remember when they first heard the conundrum, but we have all heard it. Francine said, “Everyone’s heard the question. But few of us can remember when or where we heard it first, or even when we first realized that such inexplicable questions existed.” When I read this, I thought, “Oh crap, she’s right.” I cannot remember hearing this conundrum, but I can always remember knowing that it was some problem that no one could figure out. When I became aware that this conundrum was a question that led to many other unanswered questions, I realized, the unanswered problem was one among many problems that I have accepted as not having answers. This is the point where I began to understand that

Francine said, “Scientists from the universities of Sheffield and Warwick in Great Britain used a super-computer to find a protein that is required for the development of the shell. This protein, ovovledidin-17 (OC-17), is found in the ovaries of chickens. No shell can be made without the ovaries, no egg without the chicken, and so we arrive at the solution to our mystery: the chicken came before the egg.” In my opinion this explanation, “The chicken came before the egg”, is indisputably the case. This opens a door for me that I never fathomed being open, which gives me a broader understanding because I finally know an exact answer to a question I thought was impossible to

Humans have a way of thinking that puts them above other living things. This way of thinking is how humans can freely express thoughts and how it is used to explore or solve different ideas. Freely expressing thoughts can lead to many important outcomes and discoveries. In Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the idea of evolution versus creationism is explored when Bertram Cates is arrested for teaching evolution to his students. The idea of freely expressing thoughts ties into evolution versus creation in the play because of how some of the characters view evolution and how people should be allowed to voice their thoughts on it.…

In a community with different cultural beliefs, a person from the outside of this cultural bubble can cause people to think differently about what they thought had truth, as Clarisse did with Montag. Since Clarisse has a very different way of looking at things, she made Montag say, “I don’t know anything anymore.” Hearing a new perspective can change what an individual thought they knew had truth, and a new perspective can make them consider new possibilities. Once an idea plants itself into a mind, the brain wants to expand on the thought, whether the person wants to or not. When Montag met Clarisse, he laughed to fill the silence, but much later, Clarisse made the comment, “Your laugh sounds much nicer than it did.”…

Therefore, the goal of any spiritual seeker is to find enough answers to realize “that it will take more faith not to believe in the claims of Christ than to believe in the claims of Christ.”…

Over the centuries, two schools of thought arose, presenting different ideas on the creation of mankind. Evolution and religion both presented ways mankind could have been created, however, a compromise couldn’t be made between the two due to their radically different natures.…

Judith Sargent Murray very efficiently debunks the idea that men and women are not equal in their intellect in her essay “Equality of the sexes”. During the 17th and 18th century, women we’re viewed as lesser than men in society. Young girls did not receive the same education as young boys, leaving them at a disadvantage. Because of this, women were forced into doing the domestic jobs in society, such as, sewing, cooking and cleaning. The beginning of the world and human existence have always mystified people. Human nature compels human beings to understand, put things in order, and explain the unexplainable. In ancient times creation stories answered the questions that confounded and bewildered the people living in those societies. Modern science and technology did not exist to help; no scientific experiment could be performed. Ancient societies used myth instead of analysis to answer the questions of existence and purpose; the creation stories were their truths.…

When comparing and contrasting psychological and biological explanation of any condition much of the argument revolves around Nature vs. Nurture; the highly controversial argument of the cause and effect of every human behavior, disorder, condition or disease. A typical argument for Schizophrenia would be, “What causes Schizophrenia? Is it because of a patient’s critical and demeaning home-life or does the patient have a brain abnormality?” In this paper, I will compare and contrast both of these arguments. I will cover the psychological arguments and explanations in support of Schizophrenia, and I will cover the biological arguments and theories in Schizophrenia.…

Perhaps the most intriguing question mankind has faced is the creation of the world. This is an impossible question that mankind has attempted to answer since the beginning of our very existence. Stories and myths about our creation have been around for thousands of years, but two stories particularly stand out. The Bible’s Genesis, written by Moses around 1500 B.C., and Ovid’s Metamorphosis, written around 8 A.D., are the most famous accounts attempting to explain the creation of existence. Genesis and Metamorphosis share many similarities as well as many differences, making each story unique in its own way.…
