Chick-Fil-A: More Than Chicken When most people think of Chick-Fil-A, they think of the Original Chick-Fil-A Chicken Sandwich. It is a hand breaded, boneless piece of chicken breast, seasoned to perfection, on a toasted and buttered bun, with two pickles. While Chick-Fil-A is widely known for the original chicken sandwich, the founder, S. Truett Cathy, wanted it to also be known for having excellent customer service, making sure that each guest has a pleasurable experience, and maintaining his personal values. S. Truett Cathy was born on March 14, 1921, in Eatonton, Georgia, and moved to Atlanta as a toddler. Even at a young age, Cathy had a good eye for business opportunities: from selling sodas, to running a paper route, to selling magazines. Truett and his brother, Ben, won several awards as teenagers for recruiting subscribers to the Atlanta Journal newspaper. He was drafted into the U.S. Army right out of high school and was honorably discharged in 1945 after serving for 6-years. One year after Truett was discharged, he and Ben decided to get a loan and open up their own restaurant in Hapeville, Georgia. Unfortunately, Ben was killed two years later in a tragic plane crash. In 1948, Cathy married a young woman, whom he had met when he was 8-years-old, named Jeannette McNeil.
