People are getting shunned when they speak their minds.The people are not realising that their free speech is getting censored. The United States is beginning to see the right of freedom of speech being taken away in businesses and universities as everyday life.
Every day, businesses get shunned like the one called Chick-Fil-A. Chick-Fil-A is a private business owned by one person, Dan Cathy. They have a mission statement that says they support the Biblical definition of marriage; and that is between one man and one woman.To begin, the New York Council speaker Christine Quinn is violating the first amendment of freedom of speech, “New York City Christine Quinn seeks to kick Chick-Fil-A out of New York because its CEO said he opposed gay marrige”(Bader). That is violating the first amendment and that is freedom of speech. So Christine Quinn is angry at what the CEO said even if it is his beliefs. In support of this, the Christine Quinn said to the public, “Chick-Fil-A is not welcome in New York City as long as the company’s president continues to uphold and promote his discriminatory views [...] I urge you to sever your relationship with Chick-Fil-A establishment that exists on your camus”(Bader). People said similar things like the alderman in Chicago and the Boston’s mayor about what to do with Chick-Fil-A’s CEO’s views. Even though,Chick-Fil-A supports Biblical marriage they do not discriminate against gay people, “Chick-Fil-A has faced unusually few discrimination claims of any kind for a restaurant chain. There is no evidence that Chick-Fil-A discriminates against gay patrons, and it has restaurants in many cities than ban anti-gay discrimination”(Baber). Freedom of speech has even hurt a business even if it is the CEO’s beliefs, but the freedom of speech is being taken away if things like this happens with no apparent reason to the matter. Some people may say, the freedom of speech it still there like a father of a fallen soldier had to endure an anti-gay protest during the funeral and the chief justice said that was okay. Plus the chief justice Roberts told the women it was okay to hear abortion opponents protest when the women are getting in the abortion clinics. But, that is not true, “But the supreme court devotion to the First Amendment has its limits. It stops at the edge of the plaza outside its own courthouse” (Liptak). The plaza is not a Free speech zone even outside the courthouse. Therefore,the court police officers had to do something on the plaza, “court police officers have been known to instruct visitors to remove small buttons bearing political messages” (Liptak). That is violating the freedom of speech but that can also be the freedom of expression and that is violating that. Last,a student on the plaza was arrested from freedom of expression, “Harold H.Hodge Jr.,a student from Maryland who was arrested on the plaza in 2011. His crime was wearing a sign that read, ‘U.S. Gov. Allows police to Illegally murder and Brutalize African americans and Hispanic people’” (Liptak). That is also violating the freedom of expression and that is part of freedom of speech. Even the plaza of the courthouse is not a free speech
