What is Freedom of Speech? The Merriam-Webster dictionary define freedom of speech as “the right to express facts and opinions subject only to reasonable limitations (as the power of the government to protect itself from a clear and present danger) guaranteed by the 1st and 14th amendments to the U.S. Constitution and similar provisions of some state constitutions”. Freedom of speech is ones right to say what you please without fear of being punished, is among one of the most treasured freedoms throughout America. The founders of the United States government tried to protect our liberty by assuring a free press, to gather and publish information without being under control or power of another, in the First Amendment to the Constitution. In 1969, in Brandenburg v. Ohio case the Court extends free speech rights by saying threatening speech can be protected unless the can prove such speech is “directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and likely to incite or produce such action”. (Dudley)
In other country you will be sentenced to prison or even put to death if you speak to badly about your government system or its officials. Many people from different country come to America to escape persecution for expressing their opinions about government. As human beings, we each have a different way of thinking and should be able to express our views.
Freedom of speech is both right and privilege that we can neither take it for granted nor back away. It’s important to find a middle ground where we can hear one another, where we can debate and disagree with respect. People in America have learn that is good to have an opinion and that you opinion
