Define the Charge nurse’s leadership style: The Nurse Manager’s leadership style is Shared (democratic) Leadership, but it is also laissez-faire. I believe that these leadership styles are most like hers because she empowers the staff to be decision makers while dispersing decision making throughout the group. Empowering the staff to make their own clinical decisions while still abiding by hospital policies gives people the opportunity to have more control. Although, at times it was observed that some of the staff members appeared frustrated when one of their coworkers was not showing interest in her patient care. At times, the charge nurse would also show servant leadership by putting others first and helping them care for the patient or provide for patient needs (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Describe an example of how the Charge nurse handled a conflict using this leadership style and cite professional literature to support your position on how effective or ineffective it was. When a patient whose surgery was moved to a later time, the charge took leadership and handled the situation. She delegated to a nurse the task of preparing a room for this patient to had a bed in to rest while she waited for her surgery. She also, asked for a bariatric bed so that the patient would be most comfortable in. The patient was understanding and appreciated having been taken care of, although she had to wait there for a longer time. The charge nurse showed servant leadership by putting the client as the number- one priority for that situation (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Effectiveness of this style of leadership include: this type of leadership is nontraditional. It is said that to be a great leader, one must be a servant first. Nontraditional methods of leadership are said to be the most successful and can result in positive nurse and patient outcomes (Marquis & Huston, 2015). 3. (Goal Setting – SMART- Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) Scheduled Activities – • How does the Charge nurse facilitate admissions and discharges to improve bed utilization? She prioritizes these duties by whichever is needed to be done first. She assigns patients that they already know are coming onto the unit, and if needed she does the initial vitals and provides the patients with the proper gown to change into. She then documents the vitals she took and makes sure all forms are ready and signed for the surgeon and the anesthetist to see. She also makes sure the rooms and cleaned and available for a new patient when she sees that it has not been done by house …show more content…
She should also let the oncoming shift charge nurse of family loss of a staff member or if they called in for work.
• Staff & staffing issues: When nurses call in and are not able to make it to work, or when nurses are not able to come in if they are on call. Also, if a nurse has been working too many days and the need for more nurses needs to be taken to someone in higher authority.
5. CHARGE NURSE – SUMMARIZE
Briefly summarize how your impression of the Charge nurse’s role has changed during this clinical experience (50 word minimum).
Looking at previous clinical experiences, I expected the role of a charge nurse to be more of supervisors’ job. I did not expect the charge nurse to have the patient interaction like that of the on-shift nurses. This was partly because two nurses did not show up that day that the charge nurse had to step in and help the
